If you want to bypass all the modifying of cans and you're in the market for new ones pick up a Jazz style fuel can that racers use. Big 3" cap and a 3/4" hose with vent and holds 5 gallons and has two handles. All this for about $20-$25 from places like Jegs or Summit.

I thought I would save some time so I held the S&W .357 Magnum to the top
of the can and pulled the trigger.  Made the perfect hole to thread a 3/8
bolt into.  When I filled the can with gas I discovered a matching exit
hole in the bottom of the can.  Darn!! Didn't think about that.  Didn't
have another 3/8 bolt so had to throw the can away.  Wonder if I filled the
can with water first and loaded with a .38 next time would it stop the
bullet before  it got to the bottom..  Hummm.

Maybe I will just use a drill bit.
