[AT] Cold weather starting

Ralph:
It started this morning with no ether. It had set outside with a little
wind protection, but it was 22deg with a 30 mph wind!! It had to crank
about 15 seconds to really get it going. I had a Massey Ferguson 85
with the continental diesel. There was no way that it would start in
cold weather without pulling it. I also have one of those 4010 John
Deere's that had the 12/24 starting system. The problem with them was
the generator had a 12v+ and a 12v- post. one battery was hooked
positive ground and the other negative. I fought that system for 5
years until one cold winter day, i bought a 12V starter at NAPA and
built a 1 wire alternator for it. With 2 Group 31 batteries mounted on
the loader frame under the cab, It wold start in the coldest weather.
Those special John Deere narrow batteries were too small to ever start a
diesel in cold weather... I really like the 12/24 system on the
Belarus. I have had no problems with it as long as I have good
batteries in it....
