I am surprised that nobody is talking about the old IH gas over diesel engines. I had one on my TD6, and when everything worked fine it actually started very nicely. Unfortunately that system negated two of the best advantages of a diesel engine: No secondary ignition or carb. So you had two different kinds of engines on the tractor to maintain and make sure was in good working order. In addition the cut-over mechanism was a set of monkey works in and of itself that required some TLC.

When it worked it worked great. Glow plugs beat it hands down of course but I liked it. There was a certain ritual to starting that was kind of nice. Throwing the lever and bringing the diesel online remained a small thrill the little boy in me always enjoyed. It certainly was better than that obnoxious pony on the early John Deeres.
