thanks Larry,  I remembered the Waddle part but not the Beam.
I actually watched several you tube videos recently of a young fellow
that goes out into the woods and builds structures pretty much by
hand with rudimentary tools.  That is one of the methods he used.
I was glad to see that someone in the Gen X age group was paying
attention to the old ways.   He built one mud and stick cabin that
had a trench under covered by mud bricks he made.  At one end of
the building the trench ended at a fire pit at the other end was a mud
and stick chimney.  The net result was he had a heated floor in a
mud hut.

I think that construction method is what's called Beam and Waddle.  It was 
typical of farmers coming west from Pennsylvania in the early 1800's.
