Warren:
I should have tried to answer your question when I read it earlier.
However, Charlie said it much better than I could have. I get accused of
describing how to build a watch when asked for the time... It comes
from writing technical publications.. The placement of #1 spark plug
wire in the distributor cap makes no difference as long as the rest
follow in the direction of rotation and firing order. I have installed
distributors before and got the gears off a tooth and moved the
distributor back or forward to make up the difference. i will say that
2 teeth off on the gears is a long way to turn the distributor and you
have to pull it and realign the rotor in the right place. If the
distributor shaft oil pump tang does not drop down in pump when you get
it aligned with the gears below, just crank the engine while holding
pressure down on the distributor. It should drop in. Sometimes it will
slip a tooth and you have to do it again. Also, I would put some never
seize on the distributor housing where it goes in the block. This will
help it to turn should you try to adjust timing a year or so from now.

Here is a video of a very pretty mechanic demonstrating how to do it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSvKSjiW-WY
Her technique is pretty good, my only comment would be that I rotate my
distributor advanced until the engine kicks back to ensure that I am
firing etc, then back off the distributor until it starts.
Now, another note, If you set the timing with a timing light,
industrial engines are set with the engine running at full throttle,
many make the mistake of setting the distributor on the timing mark when
static timing. When the mechanical advance comes on, then the advance
is too much... When static timing set the distributor to TDC..

As I said, I get too detailed in descriptions....
