It has been my experience that when I nose around to find out about
equipment that has been sitting for 20 years or more, within a week it
is hauled off or sold. Move quick.
I once bought a MF2155 about 3 miles from home. The lady wanted cash as
she was selling it for her mother. I gave her a check and she said that
she would take it to the bank and cash it and it would be ok. That was
at 4pm on Friday. I did not go after the tractor as I was trying to not
bother my wife with giving me a ride to get another tractor. I hooked
my trucik up to the trailer and went by the station to get gas and while
pumping gas i get a call. The lady asked if I wanted her to tear up my
check or come get it. She said that my credit union would not cash that
check in the drive thru. She also said that a guy was on his way with
cash. I told her I would have to call her back. I called the drive
thru at the credit union and asked the teller about cashing a check in
the drive thru. She told me she was there the night before and no one
showed up to cash a $2000 check because she would have to approve it.
I hit the gas and got over to the tractor. No one was around so I
loaded it up and went home. I got a call from the lady about 30
minutes later asking if I had the tractor. I said yes. She said she
was going to call the local police. I told her to go ahead because she
had my check and I had the tractor and the check said payment in full.
I also informed her that I had made a call to the Chief of police as I
had his cell phone number.
I learned a few new cuss words that day. It seems that this guy with
cash had offered her $750 more than what she settled on the day before.
That is the norm around here. It isn't yours until its on your trailer
and you are on the public road.
