I haven't had to replace a manifold gasket on a tractor yet but several
trucks. I would not do it again without taking the manifold to a machine
shop to have it planed perfectly smooth. Otherwise the new gasket will
not last long. The heads on mine were good and even the manifolds looked
ok but when I bolted the manifold onto the IH truck and tightened it
there was still a gap I could put a feeler guage into between the
manifold and head.
I did go the cheap way on my Olds 403 V8. It had a slight audible leak
under acceleration so I installed a new gasket and a little JB weld in
the area I suspected the leak. Several years later it seems to be
holding just fine.
