Steve, at the time that was all going on a friend of mine
had an Explorer.  One of his tires was slightly out of round
so he put a new set of Michelin on it and kept the old tires.
I bought them from him for 100 bucks and put them on my truck.
Later on the recall came out.  Unknown to me the Explorer owner
took his recall notice and tire purchase receipt to the dealer and
they paid him for the Michelins.  About a year later I had worn
the Firestones out and went to buy an new set of tires.  The tire
dealer looked at the Firestones and told me they were on the recall
list so he gave me a brand new set of Michelins even though the
tires were not on the OEM vehicle and were worn out.

A couple of days later I was talking to the Explorer owner and told him
about my good fortune with the intention of paying him part of the cost
of the new set of tires if he wanted.  That is when he told me he had been
paid for the tires too.  I called the tire dealer and told him the deal and 
offered
to come back and pay for the new tires.  He said to wait.  He said he had
processed the warranty claim and if it bounced back he'd let me know.  It 
didn't
so Ford and Firestone paid for that set of tires twice and they were 
completely
used up as well.  I never had one minutes problem with them except a slight
vibration in one tire.  They were used on a pickup that often hauled 
relatively
heavy loads and towed loaded trailers.

It was common knowledge around town that the Ford dealer was selling the
warranty claim Firestones out the back door (probably without the knowledge 
of
the franchise owner) instead of destroying them as Ford and Firestone had 
instructed
them to do.

Firestone tires on that original Explorer (circa '91) has a max pressure
rating of 35psi.  Firestone engineers recommended 28psi for the Explorer.
Ford dropped that to 26psi to tailor ride and handling characteristics.
Now add the fact that 99.9% of the driving population never checks their
air pressures, and let a year or two go by, and natural diffusion thru the
rubber has dropped the pressure to sub-20psi sort of levels.  Now we have
created a situation that exacerbated the Firestone's propensity toward
tread separation.  Lots of blame to spread all around in that whole thing.
It also gifted the driving population with pressure sensors in each wheel
in modern vehicles.
