Yes Housecall is my backup as well.  I run it fairly often just to make
sure.  I also have Trend Micro's RUBotted utility running on my machine.

I've never run the M$ suite but I hear good things.  The reason I do not
use it is I have been using Avast or AVG since before M$ decided to
offer a security suite.
I highly recommend those as well.  I'm not a M$ hater either but there
are other good options.

Malwarebytes is very good and I also like SuperAntiSpyware.

As a backup to these I also use Housecall - Trend Micro's online AV
scanner - also free to use.
