Ha! Spencer, that's the low-effort solution right there. Self-cleaning
mower deck ;-)
Now, every deck design is going to be different, since there's a complex
aerodynamic thing going on under there, but on my particular zero-turn
mower (Gravely ZT48XL) the cut quality degrades sharply when the clippings
build up to a certain point. I guess the build-up creates a sort of a
shroud on each blade (3 on this deck) which I am guessing might compromise
the blades' action as fans. Something like that. The end result of a
single pass is three distinct stripes: normal cut height near the
centerlines of the three spindles but longer grass between those stripes.
If I sharpen the blades without cleaning the deck, the problem is reduced
only slightly. Sharp blades and a clean deck and that cut is flat as a
pancake.
And wouldn't you know... I've JUST remembered that I've got a near-full
gallon of Slip-Plate sitting on the shelf. I coulda coated this deck back
when it was new a couple seasons ago. Might be worth a try now.
