Thanks for that John,  I've never used one but remember seeing them
used in my area for a while, years ago.  Now I guess I know why I don't
see them any more.

Three reasons why the rope wick wipers fell out of favour:  they break &
spill chemical; they drip, and on a hillside they leak on the down hill
end.  In my opinion they gave wiping a bad reputation which modern
controlled-feed wipers have battled to overcome.
