Yes,
They ran low on fuel because the typhoon was long lived; finally they had no 
choice but to empty the salt water ballast from the empty fuel oil tanks so 
they could come alongside some big ship for refueling. Three sank (790 men 
lost and 80 injured) and many other ships were badly damaged.  From then on 
the rule (maybe it was just SOP - Standard Operating Procedures) was, 
regardless of weather one refueled when down to half full.  When I was in, a 
decade later, I was not aware of above, and commented one day about our 
refueling when the seas were very calm and was briefly told of above and 
that there were "no exceptions".  Herb

I remember reading about the big typhoon in the S. Pacific in 1944 that 
naval Task Force 58/38 ran right through the middle of.  Several destroyers 
sank during that storm.
