Warren,
    I have had success using those quick release clamps like those used in woodworking to compress the beads to facilitate getting the tire onto the rim.  It makes it a bit easier to get the beads down into the deeper part of the rim so you can stretch the bead over the flange on the rim.  A rubber mallet is also helpful for tapping the bead over the rim.
