[AT] OT: Computer crash and data loss

I don't like backups by software. I have had 'backups' and still could not
get my new drive loaded with my old data. I now 'copy' everything to the
external hard drive. I can look and make sure it has been transferred, and
it is easy for me to rebuild a hard drive. Documents take about 5 min for
1.5 gb., I have a lot of pictures and that takes a little longer.

Ouch- had a similar experience, but the local repair shop got us restored
for not a lot of money.
For the future, USB hard drives are currently selling for abut $100 for 1-2
terabytes. Windows will schedule a daily backup of new material added to
the old any time you specify, say 2 AM. All that would be lost would be
anything changed or added since the last scheduled daily backup. I now have
2 USB drives and try to monthly rotate them through our off-site safe
deposit box. Got thinking that the worst thing that could happen would be a
fire and all of our life's pictures would disappear even with on site backup
drive. Most everything else is restorable with time. Would only lose 1
month's worth in the worst case.

Dean that is a bummer. I have a USB many GB hard drive which is external. It
will back up pretty much in the background. Thanks for the reminder, it has
been a couple of weeks since last back up with the holidays in there.
At least it wasn't a virus, that would really tick me off.

So, just a reminder to folks, don't forget to back up anything you don't
want to lose. I'm not a big fan of "cloud" backup services, but will be a
lot more disciplined about using that external hard drive or making backup
CDs or something. Meanwhile, back to the drawing board...
