I'll second TeamViewer.  As Steve mentioned, it's free and it's full featured.  

If you are in a position to upgrade your fathers machine/OS; then that will kill two birds:   Installation will wipe out the virus and malware and then you can use the native windows Remote Desktop available in windows vista/7/8.  But I realize that is a big "if".
