Around our house we have an XP that is about to be replaced, one Vista, two Win 7, and two 8.1s with another 8.1 desktop and an 8 .1 tablet to join soon.  There is also a raspberry pi in the mix along with three Kindles.

As for a new student I would not consider anything but the latest.  The future is ever changing who knows what it will bring.
