My old 450 had the same problem with the starter getting locked up.  I noticed over time that a solid push on the starter button seemed to alleviate much of that problem.  I'm guessing that the wear was such that the starter motor needed to spin up to full speed to engage properly and that with a soft push the starter motor had some partial electrical current cut outs as it was spinning up. That's my guess anyway.  So you may in fact notice less problem with the starter motor now that you've replaced the switch.

Incidentally, we noticed that if the starter wasn't bound up too tightly, you could put the tractor in 5th gear and rock the tires and free up the starter.  I suppose there may be other ways (besides opening the starter cover ring and backing the pinion gear out with a screw driver), but rocking the tires was easy and quick.
