[AT] Help needed on non-antique tractor

Sounds plausible.  The normal solenoid operation is to close when you
remove power, and to open when you apply power.  If the solenoid coil has a
partial short, some of the coil turns will be inactive, which does two
things (1) the magnetic field is weaker so the valve might not fully open
(2) the DC resistance will be lower and it will pull more current - and get
hot.
