If the cables are original they may be internally corroded. If they are replacement cables and are made from 12 volt cable wire they will not be heavy enough to handle the current demands of a 6-volt system.

6 volt. I believe the cables are adequate, but I will show your post to my mechanic. Thank you. Rich Brown

Is it 6 volt or 12? How heavy are your cables? If it is 6 volt you need pretty heavy cables or you get too much voltage drop.

Looking for ideas about my wonderful '53 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup with 235 engine:
When the engine gets hot, it does not want to start. If I hook up my battery
booster to it, it turns over very fast and starts. It has a new battery.
Why does it NOT turn over fast enough to start when hot? While running, it runs
like a top, has tons of power. I've had the starter rebuilt, the carburetor
rebuilt, electric fuel pump installed, but it still needs a boost when hot.
