The threat of fire in my shop scared the hell out of me.  I actually lashed
a thermocouple to the end of a stick about 6' long and jammed it into the
middle of the pile, then kept my eye on it as often as I could for several
days.  It got warm-ish (CRS but I want to say ~~100F in late autumn).
