This link tells which states require a DOT number even when operating intrastate. The states vary in the criteria. I saw one state that said anything over 10,000 pounds. Most I think follow the same criteria that determines if the vehicle driver requires a CDL. (Commercial Driver License)

Tom,
see Steve's reply. I didn't realize it unique to the State of Washington, but
did know it was required before I could get the vehicle license.

Curiosity lead to the site FMCSA where it said:
"Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or
hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with the FMCSA
and must have a USDOT Number. Also, commercial intrastate hazardous
materials carriers who haul quantities requiring a safety permit must
register for a USDOT Number. The USDOT Number serves as a unique
identifier when collecting and monitoring a company's safety information
acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and
inspections."
You say you're not licensed for interstate so why the DOT #? Do you haul
hazardous materials in bulk?

>I recently discovered that I was required by FMCSA to update my USDOT
information. Anyone who has a USDOT number must update their information every
2 years even if there are no changes. My last update was when I applied for the
number back in 2009. They are saying that Nov. 1, 2013, they will deactivate
USDOT numbers and issue civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day if the required
update has not been done. I assumed when I applied that I would be notified
every 2 years to update but that did not happen. FMCSA has all of my contact
information email, home phone, cell phone and address so you would think they
would let you know when it is necessary to update.

bulldozing/excavating business. Occasionally I haul an antique tractor as
well. I am not licensed to go out of state.

obtained the USDOT number. I was surprised how many vehicles require this DOT
number.

>I pass this along as I would guess there are many others like me that did not
keep their information up to date as required. Two local people I contacted that
have USDOT numbers on their trucks did not know about the requirement.
