[AT] Antique Tractor & Hit & Miss Engines Sale

My AC HD6G is 20,000 lbs. What's scrap going for? 8 cents a pound? So that's $1600.  I'm not selling it, but I wonder if I could get that in my area? Not too many farms left, it needs work... I doubt anyone would come far to get it home.  Easier to call the scrap man. Now, a CAT D2 in similar shape is probably worth more, 7000 lbs, a pickup could haul it.

The larger the equipment the greater the chances it ends up as scrap. (my opinion)

It costs a lot of money to maintain, store ,  and transport large tractors/bulldozers.

At the Kinzers show near Lancaster PA one guy brought in a very large IH bulldozer. It could run on gas or diesel. Beautiful piece, I was glad he started it up. He commented on how much it cost him to maintain it and transport it to the show. He could barely turn it around in the space allotted .

Same issue with old cars and motorcycles. People can't fix them and they take up space in the garage, so, they end up in the back yard.....

Seems like the  valuable tractors are the tiny ones that a pickup can haul. AC G's, Farmall Cubs, MH Ponies. I've seen pedal tractors go for more than the real tractors they represent...

The Oliver at Beilers was missing a lot. No radiator, hood, all hydraulic tubes had rotted away, all of the hydraulic cylinders had lost their chrome, grousers and tracks shot, missing valve cover,   it was a huge paper weight.

Regards,

Will

I'm surprised any of these types of machines would make it to the scrap man. It seems there are fewer and fewer of them left even if it's just to pick apart the salvageable pieces for spare parts.

Chuck and Herb, you're right, it was Beilers . I heard they got into some kind of trouble with taxes? That was quite a show. A good remedy for cabin fever.

The scrap man was always there to gobble up the no-sale items. I remember a Large Oliver crawler that was so far gone that after the scrap man won the bid the auctioneer said it found the right home.

I picked up some good parts there. Wish I had know about it before I bought some of my basket cases. Some tractors sold for a song and others didn't meet reserve.

Sure was cold some years. That auction made me buy my first full CarHart farmer suit. I fit right in with that. When it wasn't cold it was a mud fest.

I'll keep an eye out for the " Mudfest " auction.

Will

Will,
You probably are remembering the Beilers Auction. Yes, it has been a long time.   Last time I was there (1990's), Cecil Monson was having a ball; bought a truckload of equipment, etc.  Weather was decent; I was told that some years it was mud, some years snow.  A couple months before then I bought a G with endloader approx twenty miles from Beilers , sold the G at Beilers auction, and still have the endloader . It was windy,  my G was five tractors downwind of a Rumely .  The Rumely was started several times during the day, my G was well speckled with oil before the auction ended. Nearby was a huge collection (20'x40'x100') of old farm implements, etc. that did not sell or were never picked up.  Couple years later Beilers closed.

Auctions are a huge part of tractor collecting.

What was that large auction topic that was bombarding the list a month or two ago? I can't remember anyone getting slapped down over that topic?

Perhaps Raquel should have said something like "Has anyone seen the three wheeled G at WV auction?"

Or "Anyone going to the Lapp Auction in Lancaster this Sunday?"

Come to think of it,   what is the large tractor auction in Lancaster? It's usually in February? My father and I would always go. Bergeys ? Was that it?
It's been so long since I've been to an auction... I've been paying tuition now for 8 years with two more years to go... I can't wait for my youngest to graduate so I can be a consumer again...

Maybe new posters should be given a little more slack?

Will

You guys sure are a grumpy bunch.  It's those kind of mean spirited posts that will kill this list once and for all.  At this point and time, any post is better than none at all.   At least she wasn't pushing male enhancement pills, I've got enough of those to last several lifetimes!

Enjoy, Joe

I remember a paint guy doing more or less the same thing several years ago and I sure don't remember a big fuss about that.  Of course I think Walt was the big distraction then.  Not like there has been a lot of traffic lately and my computer has a delete key.
