The longer belt is a little more forgiving on alignment I think. Getting the tractor and pulley "square" to the mill is important too. I find I have to run mine as tight as possible without pulling the mill off the pegs. . Otherwise the belt slips, even on the fibre pulley of this IH mill. Belt dressing helps but only for a little while. Of course if you are not pushing the grain to it too fast belt slippage should not be an issue. I usually put through over a hundred bushels at a time so I want to run it close to maximum capacity without the belt slipping off. If you are just demoing a few bushels and in no big hurry then the belt won't be so likely to slip.
