i'm running XP, Win 7, Win 8, and Jellybean 4.1.  The big wall that you have to crawl over at some point in all that is driver software for peripherals  (that includes all scanners and printers).  As you go through that progression of upgrades, all of your drivers will need to be upgraded.  The problem is that some of them have NOT be generated for Win 7 or Win 8, or else the drivers do not include all the features the original drivers did.  Those problems are supposed to be taken care of with Win 8.1. Jellybean seems to have fewer problems than the late versions of Windows in this regard.
