Fords and Fergies never were popular around here on grain farms. The only 
ones of those I ever even drove were taking them in and out of the shop for 
repairs. To me they are all very unfriendly to operate compared to the 40-65 
hp utility tractors IH built during the 70's.

John, you've never run a MF or Ford utility tractor?  35, 135, 235 or 3000,
4000 etc?
they all have two stage clutches just as you describe for the Yanmar.

As far as the Mahindra tractors go, the first one of them I ever saw maybe
30 years
ago was a dead ringer for a MF 35.
