Got back to my Brother-in-laws yesterday. Took the line off from the guage
and started it up. Oil pumped out fine. Put my AC guage on, 10 lbs pressure,
same as what was on the one mounted in 8n dash. Is 10 lbs enough? I think it
is.

If there is a side cover and you don't have a new gasket set don't take it
off just to check.

Yeah I forgot about it being a flat head.
Is there a side cover over the valve train?  I never paid that much
attention but there should be.  I also don't know about oil filters on
a an 8N.  Don't know if it's a drain back filter or a pressurized by-pass
type.

Yes, ok, I will try the AC guage, can't hurt. I do see there is a plug in
the oil line  manifold so putting the AC guage in will be easy... 8n is flat

head, no valve cover or rockers , a nywhere else to check for flow on the
8n?

I have to believe that the oil pressure is good enough since he was using it

for about 5 years and never had an issue.

Will if the fitting is the same an AC gauge should work.  I say should
because while I believe the pressure range is about the same, I don't know
if there is an issue with the orifice opening size in the gauge or line.
It's worth trying.  First off take the gauge loose from the line and see if
any oil
squirts out.  If not then take the line loose from the tractor and repeat.
I think the oil pressure is relatively low on both.  Also, the AC oil pumps
have
a spring and ball bearing pressure relief that controls to some degree the
pressure.
I suspect the 8N has some sort of pressure control on the pump.

Take the valve cover off or look through the fill hole if possible and see
how the oil is
flowing to the rocker arms.  If there is plenty of flow you probably don't
have anything
to worry about as far as engine damage.

It's dash mounted. Good idea to check the line.

Does any know if the  oil pressure on the 8n is significantly  different
from the Oil pressure on an Allis Chalmers?  I have plenty of AC guages from

the C,WD,D17 that I could use as a test.

Will,  I don't remember if the oil pressure gauge on an 8N is
dash mounted or on the side of the engine so this might not apply.
I once had one of my AC tractors all of a sudden show NO oil pressure.
After I got over the initial panic of thinking how much a rebuild was going
to cost me I removed the valve cover and could see there was plenty of oil
flow and apparent pressure.  Turned out the small steel tube that carries
oil to the oil pressure gauge had become plugged up with oil sludge.
I got it cleaned out good and the gauge went back to work just fine.
Regardless where your gauge is mounted it would be worth your time to
take the gauge off, then start the tractor just briefly and see how much
oil is coming out of the fitting and how much pressure it appears to have.
You can do that in a matter of a few seconds of running time.  That should
tell
you if it's the gauge or line to the gauge.

Hello,

Helped my brother-in-law get his 8n running after it had been sitting for
about 3 years.

Cleaned out the fuel system.

Engine was stuck. Took out the plugs, sprayed in some WD40. Let it sit for a

while. Rocked it back and forth in 4th gear. Could see a little bit of
movement from the fan.  Hit the starter again and it turned over.
Knocked/tapped a little bit as the valves loosened up then all was fine.

Rechecked the electrics. Cleaned out the points. Finally got spark. Started
right up ran like a sewing machine.

Was 8v and we had an adjustable resistor so we did not fry the 6 volt coil.
That was a pain. Bought a new stock resistor and  we put in a 6 volt
battery. What's the process for adjusting the regulator back down to 6 volt
from 8?

Also, while it was running I noticed that the oil pressure guage was not
moving. Throttled it up and I noticed a little bit of movement in the guage.

Is this normal? Could it be a bad guage, or, Is the engine worn out? It's
not smoking out the exhaust. Next step is to try a new guage.
