[AT] 1340 Hesston swather PTO shaft

Well I spent most of yesterday on the road getting parts. The dealer
had a new aftermarket shaft (Walterscheid) from A&I and I offered to pay
half. His calculation was $750 ... That was at least better than
$1200. A&I showed $1400 on their web site. So I picked up the shaft
about 30 miles East of home, then went 70 miles NW of home to get a new
1000 RPM stub shaft for the tractor. I got new shaft installed about
7:30pm and tried it. The front half ran fine, but the connection to the
cutter unit now vibrated. The rear end of the shaft is a 1 1/4 square
shaft and the slip joint is worn and the U joint is also worn. The
Universal joint shop is backed up 3 days, so I will have to fix it
myself. I can get the shaft and a sleeve from the U joint shop, and
weld it in myself. I did this work 30 years ago, so it is nothing new,
just tedious getting everything lined up. A good straight piece of
angle iron helps a lot on this...... Rain is predicted starting Sunday,
so I have only been down for a week with this....
