Neil Yeargin was graciously talking me through working on the mag via 
e-mail.
When I wrote him back to tell him the problem I found he said "you were 
lucky"
Neil was a man of few words.  I don't think he had much faith in my chances 
of
fixing that mag.  He was right!

I guess I forgot all about it, but the first thing I did after wiping
out the  distributor cap was to unhook the kill wire at the mag; not so
much for the wire but to check for a bad kill switch. As it turned out,
not the problem as I left it unhooked throughout the whole process but I
do appreciate the thought and it is one that can easily be overlooked as
it was on the engine you mentioned. Thanks again.
