[AT] OT--Kawasaki starter trouble

Do not know about Kawasaki, John. My starter problems have been with
Polaris. The starter drive is just 1/2 below the flywheel compartment's
lowest piont. That location loves to collect water from both condensation
and leakage around the pull rope handle. The water will puddle the starter
drive and totally mess it up over time. The replacement starter from DB
came equipped with a grease fitting at the low point which can be removed
to drain any water from time to time, then replaced to lightly grease the
starter drive assemble. A whole nother problem from what you have.

Having said all that, your machine is called a MULE. I have often heard
the word "stubborn" associated with MULE.
