Jerry,

The process basically consists of lining up the timing marks on the gears, 
making sure the #1 cylinder is at TDC, setting the rotor at the #1 firing 
position, and sliding the unit in so that the #1 firing position is still 
lined up.  After it's installed you rotate the distributor left or right a 
little to compensate for anything being off before locking it down. The 
manuals usually have some decent instructions on how to do this, along 
with some decent pictures. It's not difficult to do, but can take some 
time if you haven't done it before. Worst case would be that you get the 
timing out of whack and have to start over again.
