I'm glad to see that, Gary.  My father used to tell me that things like that would grow on contacts and cause all sorts of problems. I didn't know whether to believe him or not. He died in 1987.  The concept reminds me of the musical note contacts that USED to be used in the early days of Allen organs.  They used whiskers on each note to give a slow audio ramp to the attack on each switch so you got a sound that didn't have a square-wave shape the way the Hammond organs did.  That old mechanical technique has been totally done away with in modern musical instruments -- and this source says it caused the Toyota problems.

Thanks Larry. There were reports of Toyotas doing the same sort of thing 
(perhaps a year and a half ago) due to the way in which the floor mat was 
constructed. Toyota replaced lots of floor mats, but that apparently was not the 
problem--don't think "the problem" was ever "discovered."
