I carry both of my keys at all times because I have a 17 1/2 pound tornado
called a Jack Russell that is often in the truck with me. If it's hot and I
have to get out briefly
I have to leave him in with the motor and AC running and he will without
doubt lock the doors for me.

I take a different tack in that I NEVER close the driver door without
the key in hand. Back in the days I traveled by car for work I always
carried a spare key in my left front pants pocket - the full key ring
was in the right front pocket. These days I don't do that but I still
do the "key in hand then close door" thing. One of our salesmen would
only carry his remote keyless entry. One day his battery died with the
key locked inside the car.
