I've felt those showers of hot carbon from the exhaust many times myself
John.
12 or 14 hours running against the governor pulling a plow sure will clean
an engine out!

Although old enough to be an antique, dads 4020 (diesel) Deere is our
workhorse. We had been doing quite a bit of light work with it, including
drilling. I had a field that needed some chisel plowing. It was amazing how
many hot cinders were blowing out the muffler. I considered putting on a
face shield there were so many of them. I was a little concerned about
catching the wheat stubble on fire.
When we were raising tobacco, the Super A's would go through a set of plugs
every week pulling slides.

John is exactly correct on that. These old tractors were built to work and
work HARD and any of
them will load up and carbon up when all they do is put around like a parade
piece.
