[AJD] Magneto?

Tyler,

I've always used a spare spark plug with the base grounded to test for
spark. If it sparks, the motor should start provided there is good
air/gasoline mixture and that the spark is timed.

A number of things can go wrong besides the mag coil... the impulse is also
critical. At very low revolution speeds (like when starting), the impulse
provides for more internal magneto speed which generates a hotter spark.

Since there are a number of different mag options, which are we talking
about Wico C or X, or Fairbanks-Morse?

Tyler, My father (deceased now) was able to physically hang onto a spark
plug, or mag and tell me if it was a good spark or not. Needless to say most
people cannot hang on to, or would even want to check for spark this way. He
did say though, if you take a dry green blade of grass and slowly slide it
up on top of the spark plug until you start to feel pulses; The farther away
you are from feeling pulses, the stronger your mag is. Sounds pretty crude
but is surprisingly accurate. Lyle

Subject: [AJD] Magneto?

Hi everybody,
On any 2 cylinder John Deere that is a hand start, what is the best way to
test the magnetic field in the magneto?
If it makes more sense, I'm just wondering how to test the mag to find out
how much spark it has.
Any help will be most appreciated!
Thank you,
Tyler
