That's right Larry.  I thought it was theoretically about 32.x feet at sea 
level but practically I doubt you can get past 25 feet with any normal pump.
That's why I figure, regardless of how deep my daddies well was drilled the 
water must have been rising up in the pipe on it's own to within that pump 
able range.

It is a physical impossibility to LIFT water over one atmosphere of pressure 
(around 28 feet).  You can push it with a submerged or jet pump, but you 
have to have the actual pumping action (jet, turbine, cylinder, etc, within 
28 vertical feet of the top of the water for it to do anything.

Mine will lift about 50' but your comment is quite valid in general.

Of course a "deep well" is subjective to an extent.  Mine is about 50'
and I'm sure it is a shallow well.  My mom's (more or less next door) is
at least 250'.  My cousin's (over the ridge) is at least 500'.  I
remember they had a real problem finding water for the well.

Mom's setup was at one time with a surface pump but now with a submerged
pump.
