The electric block heaters work well when you have a plug nearby. There are also some electric dipstick heaters that help heat the oil in the pan which helps cranking speed and wear a little bit. Then heated engines start better and have significantly less wear when they are heated before starting.
 
I have worked on installation of fired deiesl heaters for oil field equipment used from Colorado mountians North to Siberia and Northern China. They are normal for many Russian trucks. These can be used anywhere the vehicle is and do not require external power.
 
These units are basically a deisel fired heating could, and circulating pump, and then 2 connections to the engine with inlet on the head, and outlet on lower block, or near the bottom radiator hose. These many times are also piped into heat exchangers for fuel tanks, batteries, transmisisons, hydraulic systems, pumps, or area heat. These units have a  small circulating pump to circulate coolant.
