My grandmother had a washhouse . It was connected to the house by a
enclosed walkway . You heated water on a old wood cookstove ,at one
point it had a hot water coil in it but grandma wouldnt have running
water so you used big pots to heat water. It had a hand dug well with a
pitcher pump and a cast iron sink with a drain hose that was just stuck
thru the wall , It was also the bathouse, you used a big galvenized tub
to bathe in . Years later when one uncle went to work he put in a
electric pump and a single faucet . But Grandma would use the hand pump
anyhow . In summertime the clothes were hung outside, but in winter she
would put up a cotton clothesline in side the washouse. She used to use
the old irons that you had to heat on the stove but later on she did
convert to one of them newfangled electric one's .
Years later when she had to be moved to the senior high rise in town
,she was fascinated by the running water . Ivan
