[AT] OT - Generatorbelt exchange in 5 seconds

This thread reminds me of my own youth. Sometime in 1958-59, nine of us (all cellege students) got stranded at the Lincoln Park Zoo with just a Karman Ghia for transportation. We made it all the way down Michigan Avenue to the IIT campus in a single trip -- without getting stopped and without breaking anything.

Gene, I just looked online. Obviously you weren't the only one to think
about that swap!
lots of stuff on the internet about it.

That would be a good project now IF you could find a decent, intact VW AND a
decent Corvair engine. For me the Karmen Ghia option would never work.
A fellow in my home town had one of those things when I was a kid and I
couldn't figure out how to get in it then. If I couldn't get in it at 6'1
190 lbs., I'm
pretty sure an attempt to do so with a 6'1 290 frame wouldn't work any
better. grins. However, there is a guy in my neighborhood that has a
restored
Ghia. I don't know him but if I ever get a chance to talk to him I'm going
to ask him if a Corvair swap ever crossed his mind.

Now that I think about it, I have a 79 Dodge Colt in my bone yard. The
body is solid and I know where there is a 2005 GM 3800 FWD V6 out of a
Chevy. Hmmmm. LOL.

I never fully optimized the setup, although I put many miles on the
conversion. Stock tranny gearing was horrible for the extra power (after
all, it did go from 40 to 140 hp!!) Low was waay to low; I routinely used
2nd from a standstill. Had a lightweight (11 lb?) flywheel in it; take your
foot off the gas and it was like throwing out an anchor! Ah, the memories!
Had it in a Beetle for a while, and then got a rusty old Karmen Ghia I put
it in. That was kewl; the factory engine compartment cover on the Ghia fit
over the Vair engine, so there was no indication of anything not stock -
except for two big ol exhaust pipes sticking out.

It was an interesting swap. The VW & Corvair engines rotate in opposite
directions, but the ring gear of the VW transaxle was swappable from one
side to the other.

Again, lots of memories!!
