Side by side for work, the ATV style is more fun for play: you can lean into sharp fast turns to better prevent rollover.  Side by side generally has a much better load ability. You won't go as fast, but for getting work done you will be happier.  

I'm pretty sure JD makes the gator, not something they brand.  I recommend them, in part because I work for Deere now.
