Ivan, if you give the guy the info and he wants to dump it you might want
to offer him scrap price
or a little more for it and get yourself a good project.

Cecil , it belongs to my buddy Mark so its ultimately up to him . He
takes care of state inspections for me ,and I do tractor repairs .
I have been looking a little ,I found a rebuild kit from
Tractorjoe.com for $230 which I think is decent . I do want to run the
head thru the washer and clean it real good . Also think I'm going to
make a trip back over to the garage where its at and check the other two
sleeves . They looked shiney on top like they were making good contact
with the steel ring in the gasket .But I didnt gauge them . I was in a
rush to get it apart and find out what happened . Strange though, the
steel insert in the gasket was OK ,but the paper was all shot . And the
head and the sleeve showed minor signs of leaking . The few blown
gaskets that I've seen have blown the ring too .
Wish the guy who had ran it was still alive ,I'd like to find out how
long he ran it when it overheated . I wonder how bad the bottom end is
from the green stuff . Mark told me he went to use it one day and when
it started right off it was blowing stuff out the radiator so he shut it
down .
Where could I get a copper ring to put on top of the sleeve ? I
havent found any except a Cat dealer and they were bigger . Are these a
common thing ?
I hate to see it go for scrap and would like to see it run . Then I
could get a test ride or two ,maybe hours :) Never been on a real
dozer before .

Richard , I've had two experiences with green stuff in the oil . One
was soon as I sarted my A after a fresh rebuild for the first time ,I
let it run long nuff to come up to temp hoping that it would swell up
and seal . Naaah ! But some block sealer cured it and its ran ever since
. Of course a couple oil changes were necessary .
I have also seen them lock up tight but they were run longer . I'd
like to try and do just a new gasket if I could get that sleeve to seal
,along with two oil changes to flush the lower end . With the hope to
get maybe 20 or 30 hours out of it . My first time tearing a diesel
apart so I'm learning a lot . But ya , the green stuff wories me ,not
knowing how long it ran that way . If I just could convince Mark to
do a in frame rebuild with new bearings .
  Ivan
