Lou, what is the progression from the 3 alt's?  You say 1 is very dark.
Would it be correct that #2 is darker than #3?

I put Classic Green onto my H a few years ago, and have since concluded it
wasn't the right paint to use.  Looking at restorations at the Waterloo Expo
I think the paint I used is a little too light.  I think of it as having a
bit more yellow mixed in, maybe there's more to it than that.

Curious that Deere put a picture of a 2-cylinder on the Classic Green can
but that's apparently not the right paint for any 2-cylinder tractor.

Is it correct that the later Ag Green is very close to one of the DuPont
Alt's?  #2?

I spoke to a paint engineer at Deere about 10 years ago.  He told me that
Classic Green was the color used on New Gen tractors(1961) up though the
80's or whenever they changed to the new AG green.  I don't remember exactly
what year he told me the AG green was introduced.  He said the Classic Green
was brought out so there was paint to match the older equipment.  He also
told me the original name for Classic Green was "Iron Blue"


Now, DuPont has three variations of John Deere green in their Centari line. 
Alt #1 is really dark, almost like a Hart Parr green, my guess is that was
for tractors in the 1920 maybe early 30's.  Alt #2 matches pretty close to
paint that I see on tractors from the 30's, 40's, and 50's.  Meaning I have
spray cards with the 3 different alternates on them.  I have matched the #2
card to paint that has been "hidden" on these tractors.  Alt #3 is dead on
to Classic Green.  Dupont Imron also matches Classic Green.  The paint code
for Dupont John Deere Green is 262.  If you get Centari, it is very
important that they mix the proper Alt # for you.  I was once told there
wasn't much difference between the alt's but there is.  Your jobber might
want to just mix alt #1. Don't let them do it.  This is how I found out
about the different alt colors.

I think the Classic should be a shade or two darker than the AG. At least
the new tractors we had were definitely a lighter hue than say a
4020 or am 8640.I always told my customers that so long as they felt the new
tractors out front looked like John Deere green to them it really didn't
matter. Just pick one and stick with it, don't mix them!
Of course TRUE period paint varied all over the place. There was a fellow
who had spent countless hours tracking them down and had somewhere around 3
or 4 different shades for the two cylinder and New Generation alone! Also,
ever notice how an old original new old stock part is a darker green than
even the Classic? I think that things were bit more loose and carefree back
then so the paint did vary a bit over the years.
