John, you can see straight through most tractor mufflers. The flame I was
talking about was out the end of the muffler.

I knew you weren't doubting it but it sure gave a good opportunity for a
comment!

Never doubted the old-timers, just making a point about how tough those guys
had it. By the time I came along a long day here was 12-14 hours. I pulled
17 hrs just a few years back cutting wheat. Most of our long days were spent
doing many different things. Those that tend to go pretty long usually mean
a late night fixing something at the shop. One thing I don't miss is the
grain dryer. It used to run as much as 16 hours a day, only getting shut
down to check the oil. It just seemed to take forever to load it. Of course
I was much more impatient then, and probably missing something I'd rather be
watching on TV!

Regarding mufflers, dad ran the 2 M's here with no mufflers for years. When
asked why he has no idea. Just recently he remarked how stupid it was. He
and one of the operators were talking about nice it was once they put the
mufflers back on. My thoughts are they were young and were entertained by
the flames out the stack at night.
