Just to bring those that responded last week about the correct coil for
use on my H.
Went to NAPA and got the IC64 ignition coil ( thanks again Charlie for the
leg work). Installed it without any external resistor and tried to start
the H. Nothing, but that's what I kind of expected since I already figured
it would need more than just the new coil.
Removed the distributor cap and noticed a lot of moisture on the internal
cap surface, as well as on the rotor and dust cover. Lots of corrosion on
all the contact surfaces. Had a little issue with getting the dust cover
off, seemed to be rusted in place. Some light tapping along the edges and
it finally loosened up to were I could pull it out. Points were pretty
much burned beyond a simple cleaning up with a point file. It looks like
they weren't properly mating squarely and were burned off center. Small
amount of rusty dust on the bottom of the distributor housing.
Cleaned out the rust and gave everything a quick spray with carb cleaner
to remove any dust, dirt, and old grease. Wiped it all down and put in the
new points and condenser. The gaskets on the dust cover were pretty much
dry, so I greased them up at the same time I greased to lobes an the
distributor shaft and the pad on the points. Put it all back together with
a new distributor cap.
First start attempt didn't sound promising, then I remembered to that I
should probably let the engine have some gas. Pulled back on the throttle,
hit the starter switch, and it started right up.
Ran fine all Saturday and Sunday, starting right up every time I hit the
start switch. So that issue is apparently behind me. Going to replace some
of the wiring first chance I get since I noticed a couple of places were
the insulation seems to be breaking down.
Next issue is see why the charging system doesn't seem to be doing it's
job as good as it should. I had to adjusted the belt once already last
spring, hopefully I just need a new belt. Might just take the generator
off and see if Autozone can check it out. I'll have to see if I can figure
out what model it is, maybe it needs new brushes. Hopefully the Delco Remy
tag is still on it. I'll also give the wiring at the regulator a good
going over.
Thanks again to all those that posted.
