[Farmall] Need Expert Opinion

I'm not sure how this got so complicated, or what is trying to be
accomplished. Let me start from scratch.

As far as the engineers and manufacturers are concerned, there are:
1) only 2 kinds of batteries
---- 6 volt
---- 12 volt
2) only 3 kinds of coils
---- 6 volt
---- 12 volt, no resistor required
---- 12 volt, resistor required
3) ballast resistors that are all essentially the same.

There are all sorts of shapes, sizes and different connectors that make them
look and fit differently but that is irrelevant at this point.

Of all the ways you can combine these items, there are only 3 that the
engineers and manufacturers consider valid. Those are:
A. a 6 volt battery with a 6 volt coil
B. a 12 volt battery with a 12 volt coil, no resistor required
C. a 12 volt battery with a 12 volt coil, resistor required AND a ballast
resistor.

Combinations A and B are wired by running a wire from the ignition switch to
one small lug on the coil and one more wire from the other small lug on the
coil to the distributor.
Combination C is wired the same as A and B except that you cut the wire
between the switch and the coil and connect the 2 loose ends of the wire to
opposite ends of the ballast resistor. This puts the ballast resistor IN
SERIES with the coil.

Again, these are the only three combinations of these parts that are valid.

Now we move from what was intended by the engineers and see what happens
when machinery is in the field. Bring owners, mechanics, do it yourselfers
and after market parts suppliers into the picture. They immediately make a
shortcut based on one assumption. That is, a 6 volt coil and a 12 volt
coil, resistor required are interchangeable. This gives you 2 more
combinations. These combinations will look a lot like A and C, but the
markings on the coils will only serve to confuse:
AA. a 6 volt battery with a 12 volt coil, resistor required and NO ballast
resistor.
CC. 12 volt battery with a 6 volt coil AND a ballast resistor.

Any of the 5 combinations above will work. Piecing things together any
other way may or may not work. If it does work, it probably won't for very
long as something will burn out. All you gotta do is choose a combination
from A, B, C, AA, or CC and hook things up accordingly. If you want to do
it right, pick A, B or C. If you want to be half a...., and use whatever is
on hand, you can go with AA or CC.

Charlie,

That's why I wanted to verify whether you had a 6V or 12V coil.

I have a 6V coil, so I would need the resistor, even though it says "NO
EXTERNAL RESISTOR REQUIRED".

The "NO EXTERNAL RESISTOR REQUIRED" would not be applicable in this
application. It would, however, be applicable in a 6V system.

Carl,

No, it is a 12V coil. The later tractors (340-560, etc) had a 12V
system. Like some cars of that era they started on 12v and ran
through a resistor to protect the points when running. This coil did
away with the resistor. If you are planning to put your H back to
total 6V operation, none of this will be pertinent to your situation
and you will want a 6V coil with no resistor at all in the system. If
you plan to keep a 12V battery and charging system, then you can use
the coil I mentioned without a resistor. I guess I need to re-read
your original post again to learn your intent. My post focused only
on the " works without resistor" 12V coil. Hope I did not add
confusion.
