Hello. I have a 1942 H and I assume has a carb problem. Last night I ran
the tractor at 1/3 throttle and let it run for an 1 hour and 20 minutes to
find out how much gas it was consuming. I have a 1 gal gas tank hooked up
and filled the tank full. At the end of 1 hour and 20 minutes the 1 gal
tank was nearly empty. Is this normal? Also when the tractor is parked I
find that gas is dripping from the idle needle screw and there is gas in
the carb intake hose from the air cleaner. I'm assuming I have a carb O
ring issue that has not sealed properly? Do anyone have a schematic or
drawing of what rubber seals are suppose to go where? I'll probably pick
up a rebuild kit from TSC but does it have the correct instructions for the
rubber seal placement in the kit?

I can't tell you how much gas you should be consuming at 1/3 throttle,
but I generally figure about 1 gallon per hour when working.
As far as your leak, I would say your problem is that your float valve
is not seating properly. This could be caused by either a worn
needle/seat or a float that has a pin hole, resulting in the float not
rising all the way (because of gas inside the float). You can find
instructions for determining if you have a pin hole and how to remedy
the problem. Most folks claim that soldering the brass is the only way,
but I have had good luck with a very small amount of two-part epoxy like
JB Weld. The risk of soldering is that too much heat can cause the seams
to let go, and it doesn't take much. Force your float into a container
of very hot water - if you get bubbles from air escaping, that will tell
you if and where the leak is. I would change out the needle and seat
after cleaning the carburetor.
Generally speaking, the most you will find in a carb kit these days is a
diagram of the parts and not much else. I don't buy carb kits from TSC
because I have been disappointed in the quality of their parts in the
past - lots of stuff from Asia. I suggest that you buy your kit from
either Case IH or your local NAPA auto parts dealer.
My repeated suggestion to anyone who is serious about maintaining their
IH tractor is to buy a service manual from Binder Books
<www.binderbooks.com>. The price is reasonable, and the information is
invaluable. I would also recommend buying the parts manual while you are
at it. Especially in the case of carburetors, IH may have supplied more
than one version, and the parts manual will help you identify the one on
your tractor.

I would guess either the float isn't set right or there's crud in the
needle valve. A quick search found a parts diagram for that carb at

I often figure close to that as well. In the Nebraska Tractor tests I see many gas engine fuel usage figures around 10 hp/hour/gallon. So it's based on load when you're working, and I guess more an issue of displacement and tuning for the minimum gasoline used at idle. A Farmall Cub (60 cubic inches and 10hp) working flat out might not use more than a Super M (264 inches) at idle.
