There are several things that could cause this, but you might want to
check your "power saver" options - with laptops, the default is to dim
the screen after a few minutes of inactivity. But usually just moving
the mouse will restore the screen.
It could also be that your battery isn't holding a charge due to its
age, and the first thing it does is dim the display before shutting down.
