Sprinklers are not supposed to put out massive fires. Their purpose is 
to put out small localized fires before they have a chance to spread or 
contain them enough to allow time for the fire department to arrive. The 
first couple of minutes are the most critical. One of the problems, 
however, is proper maintenance and testing, not often done in commercial 
buildings and not at all likely in single family homes.
