Thanks guys, I know for a fact that my batteries are crap, when its unplugged it only lasts about 30 minutes tops. This computer is plugged in all the time, so batteries are out as a problem. I switched my power options to always on, and it still does it. Where do I find one of these inverter boards, and are they brand specific, how hard to install? I agree Phil, this computer is at its end stage, the hard drive went out once, and its SLOOOOOW. If I can nurse it for a few more months that would help a lot. Thanks for the help.Mike M

Mike,
The backlight in your LCD screen is going off. There are 2 possibilities, the tiny flourescent tubes at the top and bottom of the LCD are dying, or the inverter board that supplies them with the high voltage to fire is dying. I would start with the inverter (provided the part is available) and if that doesen't fix it, you'll have to bite the bullet for the LCD. You might want to consider just replacing the laptop due to the cost of the LCD. The newer laptops are getting the LED backlights. Less expensive to manufacti=ure and there is no inverter involved. They're easier on batteries too.

Phil

Hi all,I'm curious to know if the problem I'm having sounds familiar to anyone. I have a Toshiba laptop thats about 4-5 years old. Recently the screen has been going dark randomly for no apparent reason. I can still see the screen, but its too dim to make anything out; its like someone has turned the brightness all the way off. If I reboot the computer it comes back on normally, at least for now. Thanks for any advice. Mike
