Al we went from early March until about a week ago with no appreciable rain
at all. Like you said, you could connect the dots on the drops.
In the last week or so we've had a couple of nice rains but it's been
spotty. We got rain but folks right down the road a piece didn't. It
rained some last night and this morning that smoke set in enough
that I could see smoke out the living room window, between it and a pear
tree about 20 feet out. It was in the high 80's with near 100% humidity and
that smoke early this morning and I could barel
breath. The sun came out for a while and the smoke cleared out but then we
got another small shower and it's over cast and like a steam bath out now.
To tell you the truth, it's so dry that most of the farmers are ruined for
the year anyway. I'm about ready to do a hurricane dance and hope it puts
out that damned 30,000 acres of smoldering peat.

Charlie,
I'm only 36 but the older I get the worse I hate the heat and humidity. By
the time I'm 50 I may have to move to the north pole. In fact, between the
smoke, heat, humidity, watching crops burn up, etc. I am just about ready
to move now. This makes 4 years in a row it has flat refused to rain during
the growing season. If you remember the bad tornadoes that came thru in
April and affected Jacksonville: It rained so little here then you could
play connect the dots with the drops on the ground. But I bet statistically
we will not have had a drought by the end of the year because we'll get
15-20 inches of rain in a 7 day period in September or October. Hope I'm
wrong but that's how it's shaping up. Double crop beans behind the wheat
are impossible right now. Ground is so dry they will just cook if we plant
them.
Based on the forecast Saturday the only reason I am going is to meet a
friend from TN to swap some parts. I don't go every year but I have been
one time when it was cloudy and overcast, with temps maybe in the low 80's.
That was NICE.
We have had smoke intermittently, the worst was last Thursday for a few
hours late in the evening. It started clouding up like it was going to rain
(it didn't--storm bypassed us like every other one this spring) and the
smoke drifted in. It hung low to the ground and made you think you were in a
dense fog.
