I worked on generators for a construction equipment dealer before I retired . The bigest problem I used to have with home owners was they wouldn't run them. They need to be run atleast every couple months. they have a residgua l magnatism and it looses it after a while if not run. this operates an exiter winding. Although today we have a problem with the gas were'r forced to use. I still do a lot of small engine work at home. I just worked on a coleman 7K gen and the only thing I had to do to get it to work again after setting was to flash the field with a 12v. bat. Jim Hilgartner Hereford MD

Thanks to all who replied to my question!   In the past, I could go on-line,
place a JD parts order and pick it up the next day w/o having to wait in
line. Their on-line site only showed a 4-pack of filters. I did pick up one
from a dealer the next day and got it running.

Thanks again.

Also, I would like to throw a set of fenders on the 60.  On this tractor,
I'm not real picky, OEM/import would be fine.

Any places you've dealt with that you would suggest?

Thanks

Dick,
The package is right.  You just need more John Deeres.  The 4 pack
works for me.  two A's one 60 and one 4020.  All the same filter.  But
the gasket is a separate item.  That always gripes me.
I think your nearest John Deere dealer would have the single filter
available.  As a matter of fact, I think that is the only way they sell
them now.

Hi Steve.  No, not retired yet.  I did switch from military service to
civilian life a few years ago but I still work on Wright-Patterson AFB.
"Company" isn't exactly the right word I guess, more like "organization."
And hmmm, "a few years ago" is actually almost five now that I think about
it.  Time doesn't seem to be slowing down any.

I do hope to be at Portland for at least a day but am not sure of my
schedule yet.  It'll be great to see all that Prairie Gold!

My Generac 7.5KV generator is 7 years old and other than the semi-annual
testing, it's never been used. I change the oil every year and every other
year, I change the air filter and plug.  The manual says I should check the
valve rocker arm clearance after 50 hours of use.  It will be a long time
before it hits 50 hours of use at the rate we are going.

Is this something I need to worry about? It's running great as is.  It's a
Generac (Briggs?) 15hp OHVI gas engine.

Thanks,

Dick

I wouldn't worry about it for about a decade or so unless you start to use
it a lot.  grins.
If you decide to check it, it's not all that hard to do.

Dick,
The clearance WILL NOT change when the engine is not running! Fifty
hours is fifty hours independent of if 25 of those hours happen in
1976 and the other 25 happen in 2047. (Check the clearance in 2047!)

My biggest question is , the governor electronic or does it work off the
cam/timing gear ??
I have seen quite a few of the electronic governors fail and when that
happens , everything turns to S?i(^#$@ .

The biggest problem I have with equipment that sits a long while is always
fuel related. I would keep an eye on the fuel lines for cracking/leaks.Other
than that your maintenance schedule sounds more than adequate. I usually
crank mine at the beginning of hurricane season and then again in December.
Hmmm, seems hurricane season is here, guess I know what I need to do this
week.
